Traditional codes of warrior etiquette have always been a part of martial arts training in Asia. Generally, you will want to conduct yourself with cheerful dignity and appreciation for the art you study and the teachers who share their secrets with you. The following suggestions will help you feel more at home as a new member of the Portland Quest Center:
1. The bow is a sign of respect in the Quest Center. To assist you in appreciating safe training, it is customary to bow to the teacher and to the training area when you enter or leave the mat space.
2. You may address any teacher as "Sensei" (pronounced "sen-say"), "sir" or "ma'am", or by their family name ("Mr., Mrs., or Ms.______").
3. Use time before class to warm up and/or focus on the spirit of what is to come.
4. Be aware of the significance of your presence in the Quest Center every time you bow and enter the training area. Be appreciative of the fact that you are a part of your school's long historical legacy.
5. As a student at the Quest Center, please wear one of the following under your uniform: a Quest Center T-shirt, To-Shin Do T-shirt, any of the shirts sold at the Quest Center, or a plain T-shirt of any solid color
6. Be alert. Keep safety in mind. Do not chew gum or wear jewelry in training.
7. Be careful not to distract yourself or others with unnecessary talking or laughter. Pay careful attention to the teacher's instructions. Concentrate on what you are learning. Train diligently to develop your skills. It is always fine to ask questions as needed.
8. Keep effective learning and safety in mind when training with other students. The Quest Center is a place for practice and study, not competition. Never force a technique on your partner beyond safe training limits. Never resist a technique beyond reasonable limits. There is absolutely no need to injure yourself or others in order to get ahead. You can progress in a healthy manner only when safety comes first. Of course, any form of "horseplay" is totally inappropriate in or out of class.
9. Be responsible for the security of your own valuables while training. The Quest Center has clothing storage areas for your convenience, but we cannot be responsible for your personal belongings. Lock important items in your car. Write your name on all training gear articles so that others will not mistake your items for theirs. Do not leave articles in the Quest Center over night.
10. Your attendance card carries your record of training required for advancement each month. Pick up your card before entering the training area for class. The cards will be collected at the beginning of class.
